As we ring in the new year, we all make New Year’s resolutions to loose weight, get organized, find a better job, and more. As I watched the Rose Parade this morning, I was amazed to see the Ohio State School for the Blind Marching Band coming down the street. Yes, all blind students! They march with sighted guides to keep them in line and do formations just like any other marching band. They even spell out Ohio, in braille of course. The idea came about when a local school for the deaf decided they wanted a band at their football games. The two schools teamed up, and the first blind marching band was born. When the students were asked about embarking on this adventure, they were thrilled and scared, but willing to try. The Band director, Dan Kelly, says “My philosophy is – if it can’t be done, let’s do it anyway,”

That is the epitome of being blindsighted! As you make your New Year’s resolutions, I want you to think of something you don’t think you can do, but want to. Now stop making excuses and do it!

Read the CBS news article on the school for the blind here.

Because you had responsibilities. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis, and there are days when my medicine doesn’t work as well as I might like. Getting out of bed is painful, but laying in bed isn’t that much better at the end of the day, so I get up. Recently I was talking to someone at work and they noticed that I seemed to be in a lot of pain. She asked what was gong on, and I laughed and told her that my joints and I were having an argument, and they were winning today. We talked for a few minutes and I told her about my situation. She asked me how long this had been going on. I told her I was diagnosed in 2001. She surprised me by telling me that she had never known. She said that I never seemed to let anything get me down, and always had a smile and a friendly word for others and I never complained. That’s when I realized that the positive attitude that I was using to help me get through my day was helping others get through theirs, without even trying. So, the next time you don’t feel like getting out of bed, put on a smile and make someone elses day.
